Structure your thesis chapter by chapter

2 min read · Updated 11 Oct 2026

Most theses in engineering, the sciences and business follow the same skeleton. Knowing it early lets you write as you go instead of in the final month.

The standard chapters

  1. Introduction: background, problem statement, objectives, scope and contributions, thesis outline.
  2. Literature review: organized by theme, ending with the specific gap you address.
  3. Methodology: data, models, experimental setup, tools. Enough detail that someone could repeat your work.
  4. Results and discussion: what you found, compared against baselines or earlier work, and what it means.
  5. Conclusion and future work: answer each objective directly, then list honest limitations.

Plus abstract, references, and appendices for code, extra figures and data sheets.

Write in this order

Methodology → Results → Literature review → Introduction → Conclusion → Abstract. You can describe what you did long before you can summarize why it matters.

Habits that save weeks

  • Use a reference manager (Zotero or Mendeley) from the first paper you read.
  • Number and caption figures and tables properly as you create them.
  • Keep one file per chapter, backed up in the cloud.
  • Use LaTeX (Overleaf) or a proper Word template with styles; do not format by hand.

Before submission

Check your institute's formatting guidelines, run a similarity check, and leave a week for your supervisor's comments.
