Planning for MS or PhD abroad: a 12-month timeline

1 min read · Updated 11 Oct 2026

Most fully funded programmes close 8 to 12 months before the start date. Working backwards from that is the single biggest advantage you can give yourself.

12 months before

  • Decide on countries and fields; shortlist programmes and scholarships (see Scholarships).
  • Check test requirements: IELTS/TOEFL, GRE.
  • Talk to the teachers who will write your recommendation letters.

9–10 months before

  • Take English and GRE tests, leaving time to retake if needed.
  • Get degree and transcript attestation started.
  • Draft your statement of purpose; for research degrees, a short research proposal.

6–8 months before

  • Submit university and scholarship applications. Many have their deadlines in this window.
  • For PhD positions, email prospective supervisors with a short, specific message and your CV.

3–5 months before

  • Interviews, offers, scholarship results.
  • Visa documents: bank statements or scholarship letter, medicals, police certificate as required.

Your statement of purpose

Answer three questions clearly: what you want to study and why, what you have already done that prepares you, and what you will do afterwards. Specific projects and results beat general enthusiasm.
